En la capital, San José, es especialmente importante tener cuidado en las inmediaciones de las estaciones de autobuses y las calles 14 y 6, la Avenida Central y la calle 7, ya que es común que ocurran robos por parte de carteristas, especialmente después del anochecer.
Aunque el uso de armas es raro, no se puede descartar la posibilidad de que se produzcan situaciones peligrosas. Por lo tanto, es recomendable evitar las áreas solitarias y mantenerse alerta en todo momento.
En los últimos tiempos, se han reportado varios incidentes de taxis que esperan a los pasajeros en las estaciones de autobuses y que cobran tarifas excesivas o incluso roban el equipaje de los pasajeros con el uso de la fuerza. Por lo tanto, se recomienda tener precaución al tomar un taxi y asegurarse de que se trata de un servicio legal y confiable.
En la ciudad portuaria de Puntarenas y en la costa caribeña alrededor de las ciudades de Moín y Limón, el nivel de delitos violentos es particularmente alto. Por lo tanto, es importante tener precaución al visitar estas áreas y evitar caminar solo por la noche.
Incluso en los populares centros turísticos de Cahuita y Puerto Viejo, se han reportado robos y, en casos raros, robos a mano armada. Por lo tanto, se recomienda tener precaución y no dejar objetos de valor en lugares visibles.
