The new Venice Tourist tax will be imposed from 16 January 2023
From 16th January 2023, it will be necessary to pay to visit Venice for the day.
Everyone will need to register to visit (that includes those arriving on public transport and privately) but not everyone will need to pay.
Tourists already staying the night do not need to pay the entrance fee—visitors paying for a hotel will pay through a tourist tax included in their stay. Locals (residents of the Veneto region), students and anyone visiting family will also not need to pay
Anyone visiting the surrounding islands of Burano and Murano will need to register and pay, the same as Venice. Only one ticket will be needed to visit all the islands.
Interestingly, there won’t be a limit to visitor numbers—the price will, however, become more expensive, the more people want to visit. Much like airlines, the Venice entrance fee will be cheaper, the earlier that people book.
How can tourists pay the entrance fee and how will it work?
There will be an online website to register to visit and to pay, at which point people will download or print a QR code, which will be their ticket to enter Venice, scannable at new turnstiles being erected around the city or by wardens who will check visitors randomly.
The price of entry to Venice will start at €3 ($3) and rise up to €10 ($10). Anyone who is found in the city centre without having paid will have to pay the full €10 as well as a fine, which could be anything up to €300.
