Islandia. Erupción volcánica y actividad sísmica en la península de Reykjanes.

Una nueva fisura volcánica se ha abierto al norte de la localidad de Grindavík, en la península de Reykjanes, Islandia, provocando una erupción activa que ha cruzado la berma de protección que resguardaba la ciudad. Las autoridades islandesas han cerrado completamente la zona afectada y han restringido el acceso hasta nuevo aviso.

Desde el inicio de la erupción, las carreteras de acceso a Grindavík han sido clausuradas por motivos de seguridad. La presencia de gases contaminantes generados por la actividad volcánica representa un riesgo localizado, especialmente en función de la dirección del viento. Por ello, las autoridades están realizando un seguimiento constante de la calidad del aire en las zonas cercanas al epicentro de la erupción.

Pese a la intensidad del fenómeno geológico, que ha ido acompañado de actividad sísmica moderada, no se ha registrado afectación directa en la capital, Reikiavik (REK), ni en la infraestructura aeroportuaria del país.

El aeropuerto internacional de Keflavík (KEF), el principal punto de entrada y salida del país, mantiene sus operaciones con normalidad. Según el operador aeroportuario, todos los vuelos siguen programados sin alteraciones. Tampoco se ha producido una dispersión significativa de cenizas volcánicas hacia la estratosfera, lo cual ha evitado interrupciones en el tráfico aéreo nacional e internacional.

Otros aeropuertos internacionales de relevancia en la región, como Reikiavik (RKV), permanecen igualmente operativos, sin restricciones impuestas por la situación volcánica.

– Se recomienda a los viajeros que tengan previsto desplazarse a Islandia, especialmente a la zona suroeste del país, que se mantengan informados a través de fuentes oficiales, como el Departamento de Protección Civil islandés y las aerolíneas correspondientes.
– Se aconseja evitar cualquier desplazamiento hacia Grindavík y sus alrededores, así como seguir las instrucciones de las autoridades locales respecto a cierres de carreteras y zonas restringidas.
– A quienes viajen a través del aeropuerto internacional de Keflavík (KEF) se les sugiere revisar el estado de sus vuelos antes de desplazarse al aeropuerto, aunque por el momento no se reportan cancelaciones ni retrasos significativos.
– Dada la posibilidad de cambios repentinos en la actividad volcánica, se recomienda contratar seguros de viaje que incluyan cobertura por interrupciones relacionadas con fenómenos naturales.

Iceland. Volcanic eruption and seismic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula.

A new volcanic fissure has opened up to the north of the town of Grindavík, on the Reykjanes peninsula, Iceland, causing an active eruption that has crossed the protective berm that sheltered the city. The Icelandic authorities have completely closed off the affected area and have restricted access until further notice.

Since the eruption began, the access roads to Grindavík have been closed for safety reasons. The presence of polluting gases generated by the volcanic activity represents a localised risk, especially depending on the direction of the wind. For this reason, the authorities are constantly monitoring the air quality in the areas close to the epicentre of the eruption.

Despite the intensity of the geological phenomenon, which has been accompanied by moderate seismic activity, there has been no direct impact on the capital, Reykjavík (REK), or on the country’s airport infrastructure.

Keflavík International Airport (KEF), the country’s main point of entry and exit, is operating normally. According to the airport operator, all flights are still scheduled as normal. There has also been no significant dispersion of volcanic ash into the stratosphere, which has prevented disruptions to national and international air traffic.

Other major international airports in the region, such as Reykjavik (RKV), remain equally operational, with no restrictions imposed by the volcanic situation.

– Travellers planning to travel to Iceland, especially to the southwestern part of the country, are advised to stay informed through official sources, such as the Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and the corresponding airlines.
– Travellers are advised to avoid travelling to Grindavík and the surrounding area, and to follow local authority instructions regarding road closures and restricted areas.
– Those travelling through Keflavík International Airport (KEF) are advised to check the status of their flights before travelling to the airport, although at the moment there are no reports of cancellations or significant delays.
– Given the possibility of sudden changes in volcanic activity, it is recommended that you take out travel insurance that includes coverage for disruptions related to natural phenomena.
