CANARY ISLANDS. Teneguia volcano erupts on La Palma, Sept. 19

Teneguía volcano in La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands erupted on Sunday at 3.15pm in the Montaña Rajada mountains in the municipality of El Paso. The emergency level was raised to red at 5pm local time, affecting the municipalities of Tazacorte, El Paso, Fuencaliente, Mazo and Los Llanos de Aridane, which are home to a total of around 35,000 people. The air navigation manager in Spain, Enaire, recommended that no flights land on the island. Airlines have the final say as to whether they fly to La Palma, given that air traffic was not officially closed.

If you’re on La Palma, follow the instructions of the local authorities. Plan for possible transport disruptions if operating near Teneguia. Avoid areas near the volcano. In the event of a large eruption, use facemasks and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation. Monitor local media for updates and confirm flights to and from La Palma Airport if volcanic activity intensifies.
