The US Bureau of Consular Affairs has issued a security advisory recommending that travel to Nigeria be reconsidered due to a number of risk factors. These include crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and armed gangs.
Violent crime is prevalent throughout the country, including armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, hostage-taking, road banditry and rape. Kidnappings for ransom are reported to be common, especially targeting dual nationals who have returned to Nigeria for a visit, as well as US citizens perceived to have wealth. There have also been reports of kidnappings on interstate highways.
Terrorists continue to plan and carry out attacks in Nigeria, with little or no warning. Their targets include shopping malls, markets, hotels, places of worship, restaurants, bars, schools, government facilities, transport hubs and other places where there are conglomerations of people. In addition, they have been observed collaborating with local gangs to expand their reach.
In some parts of southern Nigeria, specifically in the Niger Delta and south-eastern regions, civil unrest and armed gangs exist. Armed crime, including kidnappings and attacks on Nigerian security services, is very common in this region. Violence has also been reported between farming and pastoralist communities in rural areas. Caution is advised when travelling both on foot and by vehicle at night and to keep a low profile.
In terms of travel recommendations, it is advised to remain vigilant in places frequented by Westerners, avoiding demonstrations and large political gatherings. In addition, it is suggested to hire a security service for additional assistance and protection during your stay in Nigeria.
