Myanmar.

Myanmar. Situation and recommendations for travellers
In Myanmar, since the military takeover in February 2021, the situation remains tense and dangerous. The state of emergency has been extended indefinitely, affecting public life and civil liberties. Politicians, members of civil society and foreigners have faced persecution and arbitrary arrests. Essential services such as banking, transport, health and electricity are frequently disrupted, along with internet and telephone connections.

Security in Myanmar is highly volatile, with security force operations and road blockades common. Armed clashes can occur, targeting military and state institutions, as well as public places such as shopping malls, banks and transportation. Since late October 2023, these conflicts have intensified, especially in northern Shan State, adjacent regions and Rakhine State.

Martial law is in force in several regions, including parts of Rangoon (Yangon) and districts in Sagaing, Chin, Magway, Bago, Mon, Kayin, Kayah and Tanintharyi. In these areas, only military jurisdiction applies. Curfews have been imposed in Rangoon and other cities, along with bans on gatherings.

For travellers, it is crucial to avoid overland travel and areas under martial law. The presence of foreigners, especially from Europe and North America, is viewed with suspicion by security authorities.

Rangoon International Airport operates international commercial flights, although limited mainly to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, with some connections to Singapore and Seoul. Travellers should be prepared for possible flight delays, cancellations or changes.
