Las autoridades de Porto Alegre, capital del estado de Rio Grande do Sul, han cerrado las compuertas del sistema fluvial ante el inminente riesgo de desbordamiento del río Guaíba, que amenaza con inundar numerosos barrios de la ciudad. Esta medida de precaución se ha tomado para proteger a los casi 1,4 millones de habitantes de la capital, que se encuentra especialmente vulnerable a las inundaciones debido a su ubicación a orillas del río y su dependencia del sistema de compuertas durante episodios de fuertes lluvias.
LATAM Airlines ha anunciado que todos los pasajeros con vuelos programados desde el 2 al 12 de mayo tendrán la opción de realizar cambios o solicitar devoluciones sin penalización alguna. La compañía aérea ha instado a los viajeros a verificar el estado de sus vuelos en el sitio web oficial y en las redes sociales antes de dirigirse al aeropuerto, para evitar contratiempos.
La afectación no se limita solo al aeropuerto de Porto Alegre (POA), sino que también impacta a otras ciudades cercanas con aeropuertos regionales como Caxias do Sul (CXJ) y Passo Fundo (PFB).

The authorities in Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, have closed the floodgates of the river system due to the imminent risk of the Guaíba river overflowing its banks, which threatens to flood many of the city’s neighbourhoods. This precautionary measure has been taken to protect the nearly 1.4 million inhabitants of the capital, which is particularly vulnerable to flooding due to its location on the banks of the river and its reliance on the floodgates system during heavy rainfall events.
LATAM Airlines has announced that all passengers with flights scheduled from 2-12 May will have the option to make changes or request refunds without penalty. The airline has urged travellers to check the status of their flights on the official website and social media before heading to the airport to avoid any setbacks.
The disruption is not only limited to Porto Alegre airport (POA), but also impacts other nearby cities with regional airports such as Caxias do Sul (CXJ) and Passo Fundo (PFB).
